A bright and gleaming garage door can add instant curb appeal to your home. However, regular usage and battling the weather elements can leave your garage looking a little shabby—and worse. It’s not just aesthetically attractive to have a clean door: dirt and muck can prevent your door from opening as efficiently as it should, and can even lead to more permanent damage, such as your door not opening or closing at all. Don’t let a bit of mud leave your car stuck on the sidewalk! Here are some tips to help you keep your garage door clean and working smoothly.

3 Best Ways to Clean Your Garage Door

1. Mild Detergent

Maybe surprisingly, but a simple, mild detergent solution does a great job of getting rid of dirt off garage doors. Mix one cup of car wash or even dish soap with five gallons of warm water, and you should be able to remove most kinds of dirt. Just avoid any solution that has more than 0.5 percent phosphate or solvent cleaners.

2. Diluted Bleach

Garage DoorFor trickier oil marks, use bleach diluted with water to target on-the-spot stains. You should never mix detergent and bleach, so if you do clean your door all over with a detergent solution first, make sure you thoroughly wash this off before you apply the bleach, and only use bleach directly on the oil spots.

3. Non-abrasive brush

Always use a soft, non-abrasive brush or cloth to clean your door with. Never use a scouring brush as this can take off your garage door’s acrylic. Remove as much baked-on dirt as you can by hand as this will make cleaning much easier and mean you won’t have to scrub as hard. And, as tempting as it may be, avoid using a pressure washer.
