The Do's & Don'ts of Snorkeling for Beginners, Kekaha-Waimea, Hawaii

Snorkeling during a boat tour is an exciting experience because you can witness tropical sea creatures up close. Before you submerge, you should know how to act underwater. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to ensure you have a memorable aquatic adventure.

Do:

Wear sunscreen.

Although you’ll be in the water, you’ll still need to reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially on your back. Use a formula that has an SPF of 15 or higher so that you can properly protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Additionally, opt for a reef-safe sunscreen that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, like oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Stay aware.

snorkelingIt’s easy to become transfixed by colorful fish but snorkel safely by being aware of what’s happening around you. Remember any hand signals your guide teaches so that you can communicate underwater. Your guide may use these hand signs to alert you if you encounter a special fish, swim near a strong current, or wander too far from the group.

Don’t:

Overexert yourself.

Since snorkeling is a physical activity, you’ll use several muscle groups as you traverse the water. Don’t wander into the deep or spend too long in the water as you still need energy to swim back to the boat. Periodically return to the vessel to rest your body before heading back under.

Touch the coral.

The coral colonies you’ll encounter will be breathtaking, and you may be drawn to touch them. However, you should never make contact with coral. These delicate organisms can be harmed by the gentlest touch because the oils in your skin will damage their protective mucus membrane.
