If you take a look at a Japanese restaurant menu, sushi and sashimi may seem similar. For example, sushi and sashimi often both contain fish and are served with soy sauce. Aside from this, however, these dishes are very different. Here are a few ways that these menu items vary.

How Sushi and Sashimi Differ

sushiThe Essence of Sushi

Sushi is always included with vinegared rice—rice mixed with rice wine vinegar—and can contain additional ingredients. The sticky consistency of the rice keeps the roll together and is sometimes wrapped in seaweed. The other ingredients will vary, but can be anything from avocado to cucumber to cream cheese. Sushi may also contain both raw and cooked fish. The dish is iconically known for its bite-sized pieces.

The Essence of Sashimi

Sashimi can be translated to “pierced flesh” in Japanese. Sashimi is thinly sliced raw meat that, unlike sushi, is not accompanied with rice. Aside from soy sauce and wasabi, there are no other ingredients served with this dish to allow the flavors to shine. It’s also known as a low-calorie menu option. The fish used in sashimi is some of the highest-quality seafood available, with the most common fish options being tuna or salmon.
