Paving a new driveway may seem like a simple project, but there are many considerations involved. One of the most important involves choosing between cement and asphalt. If you aren’t sure whether a cement or asphalt driveway is right for you, consider the following benefits.

Should You Choose a Cement or Asphalt Driveway?

1. Weight the Costs

One of the most important issues is the cost of each type of material and how it will fit into your budget. Keep in mind that the costs of asphalt and concrete repair will also be a concern throughout the lifetime of the driveway. For the initial task of paving, asphalt tends to be slightly more inexpensive than concrete. However, if asphalt matches the type of appearance and performance you have in mind, it’s probably worth the investment.

2. Considering the Upkeep

PavingAn asphalt driveway requires more care after the initial paving has been completed. Approximately one year later, you will have to reapply a sealant to keep the surface protected. Additionally, the sealant will have to be reapplied every three to five years to help ensure the asphalt won’t deteriorate. A concrete driveway, on the other hand, won’t need quite as much care. While a sealant can be applied to protect the concrete finish, it may not be necessary.

3. Evaluating the Longevity of Your New Driveway

An asphalt paving can be expected to last up to 30 years, provided the owner takes care of the driveway. Alternatively, a concrete driveway will last significantly longer and may not need to be replaced for 50 years or longer. While applying a sealant and touching it up over the years will help keep your driveway in good condition, both asphalt and concrete will experience cracks and damage through the years. Keeping up with repairs and maintenance will help your driveway last longer.

4. Climate Affects Each Surface Differently

Before deciding which material you’ll be using, consider the effects that weather will have on each type of paving. For instance, concrete is more susceptible to cold weather, so cracking is more common in colder climates. Additionally, the rock salt used to clear the roads of snow and ice can erode a concrete driveway.

Alternatively, asphalt is negatively impacted by hot weather. The constant exposure to higher temperatures and direct sunlight will soften an asphalt surface. As a result, asphalt can stick to vehicle tires and shoes. This can be problematic, especially in a household with small children.
