Keeping track of your church’s maintenance can be a complex task—especially the areas that you don’t see every day, like the roof. Just like with a home, the church may need a roof replacement at some point. The following signs are signals that the roof needs repair or replacement.

How to Know When It’s Time for Roof Replacement

1. Buckling or Curling Shingles

Buckled shingles will form a wavy shape that typically forms a vertical line up the roof. They are indicators of moisture that has penetrated the under-layer of the roof. This could be from poor initial installation or from the age of the roof. Curling shingles may be a sign of age or exposure to excess heat. Both buckled or curled shingles are susceptible to damage from wind, heavy rain, and freezing and thawing. Large amounts of compromised shingles indicate the need for a roof replacement.

2. Missing or Broken Shinglesroof replacement

Missing or broken shingles on any area of the roof are a sign that the roof needs repair. Compromised shingles can let in moisture and cause damage to the interior of the church. Moisture accumulation provides a perfect breeding ground for mold, which is a health hazard and can also damage textiles or other artifacts.

3. Damaged Flashings

The flashings seal the joints in the roof to keep out water. Over time, the flashings surrounding skylights, chimneys, venting, or roof valleys can all become damaged. If you can see water damage on the inside of the building, this may be the culprit.

4. Bare Areas

Shingles that are missing their granular coating or appear bare can no longer protect the roof and will eventually allow water to come in. This loss of coating results from water draining consistently over one area, which points to badly designed overall drainage.
