What Are the Most Common Auto Maintenance Myths?, Lexington-Fayette Northeast, Kentucky

Caring for your vehicle requires a lot of work. Unfortunately, many people still believe auto maintenance truisms that are now out of date or just plain wrong. You can avoid buying unneeded auto parts and equipment, enjoy improved performance, and keep your vehicle in better shape by understanding which commonly repeated car maintenance tips are no longer accurate.

3 Auto Maintenance Myths

1. Rolling Down the Windows Is More Fuel Efficient Than the Air Conditioner

Few auto parts are more essential during the summer than your air conditioner. However, some people believe that rolling down their windows will help their vehicle be more energy-efficient than if they used the air conditioner. In reality, there is no major difference in total fuel consumption. A rolled-down window increases wind resistance against your vehicle, especially at higher speeds. This will decrease fuel efficiency just as much—if not more—than if you turn on the air conditioner.

2. Get an Oil Change Every 3,000 Miles

auto partsMany auto shops continue to recommend that drivers get an oil change every 3,000 miles, but advancements in engine technology mean that most cars don’t need such frequent changes. Many modern vehicles only need an oil change after 5,000 or even 7,500 miles. However, don’t forget to change the oil filters at the same time for maximum performance.

3. Replace All Four Tires at the Same Time

Continual wear from contact with the road means that tires need to be replaced more frequently than other auto parts. In reality, you don’t necessarily have to replace all four at once if some still have good tread wear. However, new tires should be the same model and brand as the others. Extend your tire life by getting a rotation at the same time as an oil change.
