You don't need to be a divorce attorney to know that the end of a marriage can be complicated, stressful, and the beginning of some major life changes. While these issues are difficult enough for adults to comprehend, they are that much harder for kids to make sense of. Sometimes, children will keep their feelings to themselves and not broadcast how they're coping—or not coping—with the impending divorce. Here are a few signs that your child might be struggling and need some support.

How to Tell if Your Child Is Struggling With a Divorce

1. Appetite or Sleep Changes

divorce attorneyWhen a child is preoccupied with troubling thoughts, they can experience physiological changes. Their appetite might wane, and they may sleep noticeably more or less than usual. These are also signs of depression, so be sure to intervene; check in with your child, ask them to share their thoughts and feelings, give them plenty of attention and hugs, and consult helping professionals for more specialized support and guidance.

2. Difficulties With Separation

Younger children understand things in a very black and white way; there is little, if any, room for nuance. When a marriage ends, all they see is that one parent is leaving and the sudden appearance of divorce attorneys, and this can lead a child to fear separation from either parent. In their minds, they know one parent is no longer around as much, so they may not want to let go of either parent, even if it's just to go to school or to the babysitter. They might cry, refuse to get out of the car, latch onto your leg, or become scared or anxious when it's time to part.

3. Worsening Performance in School

A child struggling with divorce may have difficulty focusing on their studies. As a result, their grades could suffer, and teachers might notice that the child isn't paying attention like they once did. If you have this concern, ask your child about homework and tests, check report cards, and communicate with teachers. Don’t hesitate to seek outside professional help; a therapist can make this time of transition much easier on your whole family.
