Did you know that the NWCR has been around for 25 years? The National Weight Control Registry tracks weight loss and weight maintenance for adults who have successfully lost weight and continue to keep the weight off. More than 10,000 adults are enrolled with an average age of mid to late 40s.  Nearly half of those enrolled lost weight on their own, while the other half received help doing so.  So what can we learn from this group? Read below for some common characteristics of their success.

  • Diet: Most participants eat a low-calorie, low-fat diet and reported an average calorie intake of nearly 1350, although researchers believe a level closer to 1800 calories was more likely consumed.
  • Timing of Meals: Most people reported eating 4-5 times per day.
  • Breakfast Eaters: Nearly 80% of participants eat breakfast every day.
  • TV Watching: 62% of participants watch less than 10 hours of TV per week.
  • Exercise: 90% of participants exercise about one hour per day.
  • Weigh Ins: 75% of participants weigh themselves at least once per week.

To be successful at losing weight and keeping it off takes a combination of these factors above.  There are no secrets to losing weight and finding your own path and what works for you is the key to it all.  Work hard, commit and don’t ever give up!
