When a pipe ruptures or a faucet starts leaking, it’s time to call a plumber. But they can’t always get to you immediately, so in the meantime, take the following steps to minimize any water damage.

How to Handle a Leaky Pipe Until a Plumber Arrives

1. Turn off the Water

Cutting off the water supply will stop any more from leaking out of the pipe or fixture in question. If the leak is coming from a faucet, keep it flowing until all of the remaining water has drained out of the pipe. You can also use an air compressor to get the water out. With the water removed from the problem area, you can then ready it for your plumber to work on when they arrive.

Plumber2. Dry the Leak Source

If possible, wipe the source of the leak dry. Otherwise, leave it to air dry. This provision prepares the area for the temporary measures covered in the next step.

3. Plug the Hole

A useful tool that many people have lying around the house is duct tape. Once the leak source is dry, wrap the tape as tightly around it as you can. Tape works best for pinhole-sized leaks. If you have a leak larger than a pinhole or a crack in a pipe joint, use epoxy, which you can get from most hardware stores. Epoxy will fill in the hole and harden. It will hold longer than other quick fixes, so it’s a handy solution while waiting for professional help.
