A musical instrument is more than just a tool—it becomes an extension of the body and a partner in creating beautiful music. Putting one in self-storage requires planning to ensure it remains in excellent condition over time. Here are three common musical instrument types and the right way to prepare them before you put them in storage.

A Guide to Musical Instrument Self-Storage

1. Brass Instruments

Clean brass instruments before putting them in storage to prevent corrosion. Wipe the instrument with a cleaning and conditioning polish; take particular care with the valves and keys. Clean the inside of the horns and tubes with a brush. Disassemble the instrument and remove mouthpieces and reeds before storing it in a case.

2. Woodwind & String Instruments

Loosen self-storagethe strings of guitars, violins, cellos, ukuleles, and other types of stringed instruments before putting them in self-storage. Clean the instrument using a polishing wax that doesn’t contain oil or alcohol. As with brass, disassemble woodwind instruments before storing them.

3. Pianos

Don’t loosen the strings of a piano before storage. Unlike other stringed instruments, the strings of a piano were designed to tolerate pressure. Clean the body and keys of the piano before covering it with a sheet or tarp. A piano’s size and weight could make it difficult to transport it without incurring damage, so you may want to hire professional movers for the job.
