If you’ve recently had your lawn newly sodded, don’t make the mistake of assuming that it should be cared for in the same way as your established lawn. Wait to break out the lawn mower. New sod requires a different kind of care for the first few weeks. Following these simple tips will ensure your new sod flourishes.

4 Tips for Taking Care of Your New Sod

1. Water Immediately

When your sod is first installed, water it right away. Proper watering should go at least 6 inches down into the sod and leave it soggy and moist. Deep watering is crucial for helping new grass to put down roots and keeping it alive after having been rolled up and dry for a while.

2. Keep Watering

lawnmowersFor the first two weeks after sod is installed, it requires a lot of watering. You really can’t overwater it at this stage. New sod should be generously watered 4 to 6 times a day. After two weeks, you should reduce the watering to once or twice a day to let the soil firm up.

3. Hold Off Mowing

Even if your sod looks like it needs mowing, leave the lawn mower in the garage. After two weeks, you may break out the lawn mower, but exercise caution. You want to trim the grass, taking off only the top third of the blade, to encourage growth and protect fragile root systems that are still establishing themselves.

4. Fertilize

After one month, it is recommended you fertilize your new lawn. The grass should now be established, and fertilizer will help it root down further and grow strong. Use a fertilizer specially formulated for your type of grass for the best results.
