Fire extinguishers are the first line of defense against blazes. They can salvage properties and, more importantly, save lives. But their efficiency depends largely on the operator’s understanding of how to use the device. There are a few errors that people commonly make when handling this tool, including the following.

What to Avoid When Using a Fire Extinguisher

1. Using the Wrong Kind

There is more than one type of extinguisher—in fact, there are five. Each is designed to put out a specific type of fire, so it’s crucial to use the right device depending on the source of the blaze. A water extinguisher, for example, shouldn’t be used to extinguish an electrical fire, as it could cause the operator to suffer an electric shock. These are solely meant for putting out flames caused by materials like wood and paper. If you have a fire suppression product on the premises, make sure that you understand its purpose so you can use the right device in the event of an emergency.

2. Standing Too Close to Flames

It may put the operator at risk of suffering a burn or other injury, and it can even cause the fire to spread. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), it’s best to stand at a distance of eight feet before using the extinguisher. If it’s not possible to stand at a reasonable distance from the fire, exit the facility and wait for the fire department to arrive.

3. Neglecting to Double-Check

Although it may seem as though you’ve successfully put out the fire, that’s not always the case. Sparks can cause the fire to erupt again, and even a small blaze can quickly spread if there’s no one in the room to quickly address it. Make sure to inspect the affected area and extinguish any remaining embers that flicker before exiting.
