Carpets can give your home a clean and comfortable look. However, they don’t last forever. If yours is starting to look or feel a bit worn, it may be time to invest in new flooring. How do you know when it’s time to get rid of an old carpet?

How to Tell When it’s Time for a New Carpet

1. The Appearance Is Uneven

Stains you can’t get rid of are a visible sign of problems. However, there are more subtle aesthetic issues. For example, the fibers in high-traffic areas, like hallways, might look slightly darker than the carpet along the walls or in lightly traveled areas.

2. You Can’t Get Rid of Odors

Pets, kids, and food spills can all lead to trapped odors, which can be minimized by removing stains and cleaning regularly. However, if you notice them lingering even after cleaning, they may be stuck in the fibers or padding.

3. It Has Tears & Rips

Stains are sometimes removed, but visual signs of wear, like tears or rips, are not. If you have a small issue, you may be able to cover it up, but if you notice them popping up in multiple places, it’s probably time for a new one.

4. The Surface Is Uneven

It’s not just the carpet fibers that get worn down over time. The padding also breaks apart or flattens out. If it has lost some cushioning, or if it’s uneven or bumpy in places, you should probably have both the carpet and pad replaced.

5. It’s Simply Outdated

Carpet tends to last in good condition for about 10 to 15 years. If you can’t remember the last time you got a new one, or if the style is outdated, it’s probably time to choose something new.
