It might seem like your air conditioner operates at the push of a button, but this cooling equipment consists of several parts that work together to deliver safe, efficient, and comfortable climate control. Knowing what these components are can help you pinpoint the source of sudden problems and determine whether you need AC repair. Here are a few of the most important parts of the air conditioner, what they do, and when you may need to fix them.

5 Parts of Your AC System to Know

1. Filter

Air filters are typically in the return register or a slot within the air handler. These filters screen out a variety of harmful contaminants, such as dust, pollen, and other allergens, to maintain good indoor air quality. They can become clogged over time, which reduces system efficiency and overall air quality. To avoid these problems, replace filters about once every 60 to 90 days.

2. Refrigerant

The refrigerant flows through a series of tubes to absorb and release heat. If one of the tubes develops a leak, the refrigerant levels will drop; the system will then struggle to maintain your temperature settings. In these situations, it’s best to hire an AC repair specialist to locate and seal the leak and recharge the refrigerant.

3. Condenser & Evaporator Coils

4. Compressor

The compressor uses a motor to transport the refrigerant between the coils for proper heat exchange. During an annual tune-up, the AC repair technician will clean and lubricate it to ensure it runs efficiently. Without this service, your cooling equipment is likely to overheat.

5. Fan

The fan, which is part of the air handler, helps move cool air through the ductwork. Cleaning this part at least once a year keeps it running smoothly. However, if you hear odd noises in the handler or don’t feel any air coming through the vents, then have an AC repair technician replace the fan.
