Every day, you rely on your car for safe transport between destinations. But to maximize its life span, have the oil changed regularly. Replacing the oil will keep your engine lubricated and prevent it from overheating and breaking down. Below are a few of the tell-tale signs that indicate it’s time for an oil change

How to Tell When You Need an Oil Change

1. Check Engine Light

When the check engine light on your dashboard flashes on, your gas cap may be loose, or your engine may be operating inefficiently. Some vehicle makes and models, however, are programmed to turn the light on at specific mileage targets as a reminder that you need an oil change.

2. Loud Noises

Soil changetrange screeching or knocking sounds coming from beneath your hood are indicators that there’s an issue with your engine. Without adequate lubrication, mechanical parts rub together and will eventually wear down and malfunction. When you hear engine noises, immediately take your vehicle in for service to rule out the need for an oil change.

3. Dark Oil

As a general rule of thumb, perform an oil check at least once every one to two months. Pull the dipstick out of the oil reservoir, wipe it down, and stick it back in. Pull it out once more to check the color of the oil and the level. If it’s honey-colored or light brown, your oil is fine. If your oil is dark or black, it’s dirty and needs to be changed.
