When it comes to unforgettable vacations, it's hard to beat a snorkeling trip unless you also go swimming with turtles. While the activity attracts adventurers of all ages, keep in mind that certain rules need to be followed during the event. To make the most out of your experience, follow these three rules during your snorkeling trip.

What You Need to Know About Swimming With Turtles

1. Don't Touch Them

Seeing a sea turtle up close and personal is so inspiring for some snorkelers that they're tempted to touch them. However, it's illegal to do so. Both of the two most common sea turtle species in Hawaii, green and hawksbill, are federally protected. The green sea turtle is listed as Threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, while the hawksbill is categorized as Endangered. Feeding them is also prohibited, resulting in serious fines and even criminal charges.

2. Give Them Plenty of Space

When you're swimming with turtles, don’t swim directly above them—they may refrain from rising to the surface out of fear, causing them to drown. Additionally, approach any turtle from the side so they have plenty of space to swim forward, up, or back, and leave at least six feet of distance between you.

3. Stay Quiet

Like any wild animal, turtles are fearful of human interaction. Any sudden movements or noises can make them swim away. To avoid frightening the turtles, don’t splash when you're snorkeling, and when you come up, don't speak too loudly to other members of your party.
