Tips for Remodeling Small Bathrooms

1. Use Glass & Mirrors

bathroom-remodelingA small bathroom looks more spacious if you use mirrors and glass, because light decreases the appearance of boundaries and space. Choose a large mirror over the sink, or a mirrored medicine cabinet to usher in light. Glass shower walls are another option. Natural light can enter contractor created window additions if mirrors don’t cut it. Avoid plexiglass windows which may stain or discolor over time.

2. Go With Light Colors

A white, light grey, or light pastel paint and white tile increases the feeling of space in a small bathroom. You can add pops of color with some accent tiles, or colorful towel hangers. Additionally, light vinyl or tile flooring will reflect light back up and help the area feel expansive.

3. Get Creative With the Sink & Vanity

Bathroom remodeling in a small area requires thinking outside the box, and you can do this with different vanity options. Choose a corner sink/vanity combination with underneath storage. Or float the vanity off of the floor, using an installation with legs and shelving underneath. A rounded vanity literally takes the edge off sharp corners that can be hard to avoid in a small space. And even if there is room for 2 sinks, consider installing only one to keep valuable counter space. If you can keep the counter clear, it adds a feeling of size and openness. Think about a narrow, trough-style sink to conserve a few extra inches and wall mounted faucet.

4. Utilize Space Over the Toilet

In many small bathrooms, the sink and toilet are next to each other. Choose shelving in a light stone or natural wood to extend from the sink area over the toilet. While the shelving over the toilet is narrow, it can hold a few essentials and looks modern. Or, place a mirrored cabinet over the toilet to store items and create a feeling of space.

5. Keep Decor Simple

In a small space, simple decor helps keep the room from being visually overwhelmed or cluttered. Opt for a simple color scheme, minimal non-essential items, and clean, clear lines. Put things like a laundry basket and extra towels and toiletries in storage elsewhere if possible. Keep to 1-2 colors for a feeling of visual ease.
