How to Move Antiques Safely

1. Get Documentation

The first step is to document what you have. This way, if there is a problem, you can supply your movers or the insurance company with an official record of the items’ values and seek fair compensation. If you haven’t had your antiques appraised recently, do so before your move. Take photos of your items, and create a thorough inventory so you can inspect everything when it arrives in the new place. Also, check with your homeowners or renters insurance company to confirm that you’re covered for any losses or damages.

2. Pack Small Items in Boxes

moversSmall items, such as dishes and vases, should be packed carefully in boxes with the contents clearly marked for the movers. Choose the smallest possible boxes for the items, wrapping them in tissue or air-filled plastic wrap. Fill any extra space in the boxes with balls of paper or packing peanuts to keep the belongings from moving around during transit. For extra protection, double box the items with an extra layer of packing material in between the layers.

3. Wrap Furniture Securely

Professional movers are typically prepared to protect furniture from damages while it’s being transported, but your antiques require special care. Disassemble as much as you can, carefully wrapping individual parts in protective material. Protect wood furniture with moving blankets or furniture pads secured with stretch wrap or foam wrap, taking care not to let the wrap touch the wood, as it can cause damage. Finally, add a layer of bubble wrap before placing the items on the truck.

4. Load Them First

When the moving company arrives, request that your antiques be loaded on the truck last. This way, they can be unloaded into your new place first, limiting the amount of time they spend on the truck and in danger of being knocked over or dropped during loading and unloading. Mark all of the boxes containing antiques carefully, and point them out to the movers so they know to be especially careful.
