While you can’t control other drivers, there are plenty of ways you can work to stay safe on the road. Defensive driving tactics keep you aware and ready to react at all times so you can protect your passengers and avoid towing and collision repair services. Here’s how to get started.

A Guide to Defensive Driving

1. Adjust the Mirrors

Adjust your mirrors for better visibility by first adjusting your seat and steering wheel. Once you feel comfortable, fix your rearview mirror so you can see the middle of the back window clearly. Also, make adjustments based on the time of day to reduce glare. Use the controls or manually fix your driver’s side mirror to see the road and a sliver of your vehicle’s side. Sit on the passenger’s side to make adjustments to the other mirror.

2. Use Your Turn Signals

towingAlways use your turn signals, even if you think no other cars are around. Turn the signal on before you change lanes to let other drivers know your intentions. Avoid switching the signal as you are moving over. Look behind you after turning the signal on to check for vehicles in your blind spot.

3. Never Multitask

Focus exclusively on driving instead of using time in the car to do other activities. You need your complete attention to avoid collisions and towing services. Avoid checking your email, talking on the phone, applying makeup, changing your shirt, or doing anything else that takes your eyes off the road for even a second.

4. Keep up With Traffic

Check the speed limit of every road and highway you’re on, and keep up with the flow of traffic instead of driving too fast or slow. Speeding makes it nearly impossible to react to other drivers and road hazards in time while driving slowly is disruptive. Many drivers also find slow-moving vehicles irritating and can become more likely to speed and make other rash decisions.

5. Don’t Forget About Your Hazards

Use your hazards when you need to slow down for any reason, such as a flat tire or when you aren’t sure which exit to take. Hazards exist solely for safety purposes and make it clear to other drivers that something is wrong, and they should move away from your vehicle.
