Whether you're planning to sell or buy a house, you can assume there is a major move in the near future. While it's no surprise that moving can be a stressful experience, there are some ways you can streamline the process. These actions will make the move easier on the movers you hire—and on yourself—and help accomplish the job effectively, quickly, and with a minimum of hassle and upheaval.

How to Help Your Movers

1. Be Packed & Ready

You've made the decision to sell or buy a house. You've tended to all the real estate details and signed a mountain of paperwork, and all the necessary monies have changed hands. Now, it's time to pack. Don't waste time on moving day by being unprepared. This will only force the movers to waste valuable time waiting for boxes to load up. Before the movers arrive, go through each room and ensure that all smaller items have been wrapped and packed appropriately in boxes. Larger items, like furniture and appliances, can be prepped and handled by the movers, but everything else should be securely boxed and ready to go.

2. Label the Breakables

buy a houseMovers are focused on the demands of the job at hand, and they often work with speed and efficiency. They may not have the time to read the contents listed on the outside of every single box. But label boxes that contain breakable items with the word “Fragile.” Write the word in large and legible lettering. This lets the movers know to handle these boxes with extra care—without you having to monitor the moving of every single one.

3. Unplug All Electrical Cords

Unplug all electrical items from the wall and separate the cords. Wind the cords neatly, secure them in plastic bags or pieces of newspaper, and keep them beside their respective items. Again, this saves the movers a considerable amount of time. For dustier places, like the space behind a television or computer, you may need to clean up the area with a handheld vacuum first to make the cord-organization process smoother.
