Hair loss can be caused by aging or genetics, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. Hair transplantation can reverse thinning or balding, restoring your hair to boost your confidence. If you’re considering this treatment, you may wonder what it entails. To help you decide whether it’s for you, here’s more information about this type of surgery and some questions people often have about it.

FAQ About Hair Transplant Surgery

What is the procedure?

Before the procedure, local anesthetics are applied to numb the area. The surgeon then removes follicles from the donor site, which is typically the back or sides of the head. They can remove an entire section through a follicular unit transplant (FUT) or individually during follicular unit extraction (FUE). After this, the surgeon will create tiny holes or slits in the destination area to implant the follicles.

How long does it take?

Depending on how large the hair transplantation area is, surgery can last anywhere between four to 10 hours. Men typically require one to two sessions to achieve full results, while women may need more to achieve desired density.

What is the recovery process?

Hair TransplantationYour scalp may be sore for a few days, which can be remediated with over-the-counter pain medication. You must avoid strenuous physical activity for a few weeks, since this increases blood flow and may cause your incisions to bleed. Most people resume their regular activities three to five days after surgery.

Will there be scarring?

You should experience little to no scarring when your scalp is completely healed. You may notice a small mark where the transplanted hair was taken from, but that is usually covered by surrounding locks.

Is it permanent?

In most cases, you will not need future hair transplantation after your procedure. However, your transplanted hair will fall out within six weeks of surgery, which is normal. The new growth will begin five to six weeks after the transplants have fallen out.
