Massage is a wonderful way to pamper yourself and help the body heal. Two of the most popular techniques are Swedish and deep tissue. Curious about the differences? Here’s a closer look at how to decide which is best for you.

Should You Get a Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage?

Swedish

This purpose of this style is to ease muscular tension and offer the body relaxation. The therapist will use long strokes, circular movements, and kneading that both relax the body and stimulate nerve endings. The session will increase blood flow and drainage of the lymph system (not to be confused with the lymphatic style, which specifically targets this system). The therapist can use variable pressure—the most important factor is what you’re comfortable with. Most bodyworkers use special oils that nourish the skin and may offer options of aromatherapy with the addition of essential oils.

Choose a full-body massage or focus on a specific area such as the back and neck. Typical Swedish sessions are 60 or 90 minutes, and you will be unclothed and under a light covering for the treatment. Therapists are trained to preserve modesty and work with clients’ comfort levels, so be sure and communicate any concerns or preferences you have around how the treatment is conducted.

Deep Tissuemassage

This style uses similar techniques to the Swedish technique but is meant to access the deeper connective tissue and provide healing for the body via the release of contracted muscle and tissue. It also promotes blood flow and lymphatic drainage. The pressure used is much greater, may include compression, and may at times be painful. As with the Swedish option, you’ll be unclothed and covered, and the therapist will use lotion or oil and begin with lighter pressure to wake up the body before moving on to problem areas.

Deep tissue is best for athletes or those with chronic pain who are looking to resolve issues in specific areas of the body.  While the massage may be pleasurable, it’s not meant to be relaxing. Communication with your therapist is key, as they need to know about injuries and what issues are trying to be resolved as well as understand how much pressure you can tolerate. Keep in mind that you may be sore the next day.

Choose Swedish massage to relax and deep tissue to work with injuries or persistent issues. Indigo Wellness in Atlanta, GA, offers both of these beneficial styles alongside options for hot stone treatment or pregnancy-related sessions. Their full-service spa also offers skin and nail care, lash treatment, Botox®, and holistic medicine. Call (404) 370-1151 to book an appointment or visit the website to see a full range and description of services.
