Hardwood floors are highly coveted for their natural beauty, versatility, and longevity. And yet, in spite of these qualities, they can be subject to unsightly wear and tear. To keep them looking their best for as long as possible, try to avoid the following practices.

Ways Homeowners Are Accidentally Harming Their Hardwood

1. Wearing Shoes in the House

Shoes track dirt and moisture into your home, which can negatively impact the shine and strength of the finish. High heels, in particular, are problematic as the shape and force of a stiletto can easily cause dents and scratches that require floor refinishing to eliminate. Therefore, go barefoot or keep slippers on a mat by the door to change in to and invite your guest to do the same.

2. Unprotected Furniture Legs

Chairs, tables, couches, and even bookshelves often feature metal and wooden legs. The weight of this furniture, particularly when it’s in use, can push these legs into your hardwood floors. Before delegating your furniture to its chosen place, add protective felt pads to the bottom of the legs. This will reduce the odds of denting. In addition, pick up your furniture when moving it instead of sliding the pieces across the floor to avoid scratches.

3. Wet Mopping

Hardwood FloorsWhile hardwood floors have a layer of finish to protect against spills and moisture, wet mopping on a regular basis can allow water and cleaning fluids to penetrate the wood, causing swelling, warping, or the floorboards to separate. Instead, stick to using a vacuum, microfiber cloths, or barely damp mops.

4. Using Abrasive Cleaning Chemicals

All-purpose cleaning products, dishwashing soap, and any ammonia-based fluids should be kept away from your hardwood floors. These harsh chemicals can easily remove and penetrate the finish and the protective layers on top of the wood. Talk to your flooring contractor to determine whether your floors have been coated in wax or polyurethane. Once you have this information, invest in wood flooring cleaner specifically for wax-coated floors or use a simple mixture of vinegar and water for polyurethane-coated wood.
