3 Common Wisdom Teeth Extraction Mistakes to Avoid, Haslet, Texas

If your wisdom teeth are crowded or impacted, your dentist will likely recommend an extraction. To ensure a successful treatment and avoid potential complications, you need to know how to properly care for your mouth following the wisdom teeth extraction. Below are a few of the most common mistakes patients make, as well as tips on how to avoid them.

What Not to Do After Wisdom Teeth Extraction

1. Spitting and Rinsing Excessively

Dry socket is a complication that occurs when the blood clot from the procedure becomes dislodged and exposes the nerve endings. If you spit or rinse your mouth repeatedly within the first 24 hours, this can increase your risk of dry socket. Wait at least 12 hours after surgery to rinse with a warm salt water mixture.

2. Forgetting to Take Medication

Fill these prescriptions ahead of time so you can access them immediately after the procedure. Take the medication as prescribed, and avoid operating vehicles when taking painkillers.

3. Smoking

Smoking within 72 hours of your surgery can increase the risks of complications, such as infections or dry socket. For example, the force of sucking on a cigarette can dislodge the blood clot. The chemicals in tobacco will also delay the healing process and increase bleeding.
