If you live in a hilly or mountainous area, retaining walls can be used to even out different levels of your yard and create a usable space. However, choosing the right variety is necessary to protect the structural integrity of your outdoor space. Here are four main types of retaining walls.

What Are the Different Types of Retaining Walls?

1. Gravity

One of the most popular varieties is a gravity retaining wall. These can be built with landscaping materials that are readily available at home improvement stores, like bricks and pavers. Gravity walls use the weight of pavers, bricks, and soil to create a strong and stable reinforcement that holds back soil.

2. Cantilevered

Typically made from concrete, cantilevered retaining walls are usually tied into the main slab with steel rebar to provide more structural support.

3. Sheet Piling

Sheet piling retaining walls are simple but effective when a basic structure is needed. Made with steel or wood that is physically driven into the ground, these basic walls can be installed in a series to hold back dirt and rocks.

4. Anchored

One very strong variety is the anchored retaining wall, which gains its strength from metal or concrete pilings planted into the ground. These pilings can be used to add an anchoring point for a wall or placed within other structures such as cinder blocks.
