The right deck can provide your home with a gorgeous place to gather outdoors. Unfortunately, without the right exterior paint and stain, your deck could be damaged by the elements or by everyday use. Here are three staining tips to help you protect your investment and keep your deck looking new throughout the year.

Deck Staining Tips

1. Watch the Weather

Paints and stains need the right conditions to dry and cure properly, which is why it’s so important to check the weather before you start your project is so important. The weather should be at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit when you apply the stain and shouldn’t drop below 32 degrees overnight for several days following the initial application. You also shouldn’t apply stain on a rainy day, since the extra moisture could make it difficult for the stain to adhere properly and could lead to splotchy results.

2. Prepare the Material Carefully

In addition to checking for nails or screws that may not be flush with the surface of the wood, you should also look for rough wood and sand it carefully. Remove all sawdust particles by sweeping or vacuuming the surface.

3. Apply Several Thin Coats

Instead of applying one or two thick coats of stain, focus on applying several thin coats of stain. Give each coat enough time to dry and harden before applying the next one. Read the directions on the back of the container to ensure the best results, whether you plan to leave the stain alone after it dries or apply exterior paint over it.
