A music festival offers a way for attendees to experience live music directly from the voices, hearts, and souls of the artists themselves, all while surrounded by like-minded folks in a fun, vibrant, yet casual environment. Music festivals can draw large crowds, so you want to be sure to take the time to plan out your visit and put some safety precautions in place. To help in that process, below are a few tips for attending a music festival.

How to Get the Most Out of a Music Festival

1. Check Out the Lineup Ahead of Time

One of the major appeals of a music festival is that they tend to draw a large and diverse lineup of talent. Since many festivals take place over the course of days, it's not realistic that you'll be able to catch every act. Before you go, look over the schedule and make three separate lists—the acts that you must see, those you're comfortable skipping, and those that fall somewhere in between. Then, plan your schedule accordingly, but be flexible. Keeping an open mind can expose you to an exciting new live band or artist you've never seen before.

2. Watch Your Phone

While they may not be the most fashion-forward accessories, a fanny pack is ideal for going to a festival. Store your phone and all essentials right on you—without having to worry about pickpockets or keeping track of a purse.

3. Be Comfortable

Wear loose clothing. If hot temperatures are forecast, wear light fabrics and plenty of sunscreen. Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and if you drink alcohol, be sure to have a substantial meal before indulging. Wear tennis shoes instead of flip-flops, which could slip off, or heels, which can be uncomfortable. Know the locations of the nearest bathrooms. If you're planning a late night, take a nap in the afternoon. Listen to your body. When you need to rest, rest. When you need to eat, eat.
