Bipolar disorder is a common mental condition marked by drastic changes in mood, activity levels, and functioning. If you suspect that someone you love has this disorder, being able to recognize the symptoms is the first step to providing the necessary support and finding the most beneficial bipolar treatment. Learn more about three of the most common signs.

Common Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

1. Mania

The most obvious manifestations of bipolar disorder are noticeable highs and lows. The highs are part of the manic stage of the illness. Mania typically comes with dramatic increases in energy; feelings of invincibility and grandiosity; difficulty sleeping; constantly shifting trains of thought; and rapid speaking patterns. Mania also may include a propensity for risky behaviors, such as alcohol or drug consumption, increased spending, or a surge in sexual behavior.

2. Depression

Symptoms include feelings of sadness and hopelessness; little or no energy; sleeping significantly more or less than usual; and a loss of enjoyment in life. Suicidal ideation may or may not be present. While all forms of depression are serious, in cases like this it could be indicative of a specific condition like bipolar disorder.

3. Hypomania

In some individuals, mania might not be particularly pronounced, or shifts in mood may not be extreme. This is called hypomania. The symptoms are similar to mania but much less intense. Bipolar treatment is as essential for hypomanic individuals as it is for those in a manic or depressed state; without treatment, hypomania can develop into full-blown mania in the future.
