Wrought iron gates and fences add elegance and sophistication to any property. After being exposed to water and air, however, they can develop rust. This substance spreads easily and weakens metal that hasn’t been properly maintained. The following steps will help you remove rust before it corrodes the material.

How to Restore a Wrought Iron Gate or Fence

1. Scrub With a Wire Brush

Use a dry wire brush to remove as much rust and damaged paint as you can. Scrubbing dislodges big flakes, so wear goggles to protect your eyes. Rubber gloves, closed-toe shoes, and long pants and sleeves will keep rust and the cleaning chemicals you’ll need later off your skin.

2. Sand the Surface

Sweep away smaller flakes with a dry paintbrush before going over the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Synthetic steel wool also works well and is flexible enough to get into tight corners and crevices. Use a phosphoric acid-based chemical rust remover on stubborn spots to ensure your wrought iron gate is completely free of corrosion.

3. Apply a Rust Neutralizer

Prevent rust from returning by applying a product that removes microscopic flakes and creates a clean surface for refinishing. Some products come in a spray, while others use a brush-on formula, so read the manufacturer’s application instructions carefully. If you want to avoid harsh chemicals, try a solution of equal parts white vinegar and lemon juice.

4. Prime & Paint

Use an alkyd primer on your wrought iron gate or fence as soon as it is dry to prevent further corrosion. Primer creates a barrier that blocks moisture. Once the primer is fully cured, apply two coats of rust-resistant paint in your chosen color. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second. Keep your gate and fence looking its best by buffing any developing corrosion and washing with soapy water twice a year.
