Goldendoodles are playful, friendly, and downright adorable. However, not all goldendoodles are the same. Based on their genetics, these loving dogs can have a variety of fur types, and each requires different dog grooming techniques. Before you get a new four-legged friend, use the guide below to understand their different types of fur.

Why Goldendoodles Have Different Coats

Three different genes dictate the type of fur on a goldendoodle. Depending on the combination made from its breeding, it can result in seven different types of coats that have different dog grooming needs. The three genes are the RSPO2 gene, which affects the furnishings; the FGF5 gene, which indicates long hair; and KRT71, which results in curly fur. The various combinations of these genes can result in three primary types of fur: straight coat, wavy coat, and curly coat. Knowing which type your dog is helps with the pet grooming.

Dog Grooming Needs for Different Coats

Dog GroomingRegardless of which type of goldendoodle you get, there are some basic pet care tasks you’ll have to do. They need to be brushed regularly to avoid matted fur, and while dog baths are recommended, don’t do it too often. This can cause their skin to lose natural oils needed to keep skin healthy.

If the goal is for your pet to need as little grooming as possible, go with a long-haired pup. They have more golden retriever in them, which means they shed more but also require less maintenance. However, if you prefer to avoid excessive shedding, choose the curlier kind, but remember they require more frequent trips to the pet groomer.
