Rims link the axles and tires together, and although you invested in sturdy custom rims, these parts need to be monitored and maintained.  Damaged rims can make it difficult and dangerous to operate your vehicle. Here are a few red flags that indicate it’s time for a new rim.

When to Replace Your Custom Rims

1. Visible Damage

Perform a thorough visual inspection of your rims to check for dents, dings, and cracks on the surface, and replace damaged ones. Even the most well-built set of custom rims can sustain damage from a forceful impact. Sometimes, the issue is found inside the rim itself, and it can only be discovered during wheel alignment and inspections.

2. Unusual Vibrations

A rim bent out of shape can cause your tire to have uneven contact on the road’s surface. Pay attention to vibrating seats and shakiness in your steering column as these signs indicate a problem with your rims.

3. Low Tire Pressure

Since the wheel is designed to sit flush against the tire, it’ll create slow air leaks when it pulls away from being bent. If you notice a frequent drop in your tire’s pressure but don’t see cracks or holes in the rubber, the problem may be caused by faulty rims.

4. Poor Handling

Driving with a bent rim mimics most of the symptoms of a flat tire, such as rhythmic thumping sounds, continuous vibration, pulling to one side, and reduced gas mileage. Additionally, you may find it difficult to brake, steer, or make a turn on the side of the damaged wheel.
