If you spend enough time outside, you may end up getting bit by an insect. Since stings can result in allergic reactions, you must know what steps to take in this situation. Seeing a medical provider may become necessary if the site starts showing certain signs. To help you understand what to do to prevent complications, here’s a guide to the steps to take following a bug bite.

What to Do If You Get Bitten by a Bug

Monitor the Site

medical providerInspect the site closely for signs of a reaction in the hours following the bite. Examples include redness and swelling, pain or itching, and a white spot where the stinger punctured the skin. If you’re allergic to the insect that bit you, you may also develop symptoms throughout the rest of the body, like hives, abdominal cramping, dizziness, difficulty breathing, swelling of lips, eyelids or throat and flushed or pale skin. If you suspect you’re having an allergic reaction, visit a medical provider right away for prompt care.

Combat Any Symptoms

If the bite did not cause an allergic reaction, wash the site with soap and water to remove debris. If there are any stingers lodged in the skin, remove them using tweezers. Then, you simply have to manage the symptoms until they dissipate.

Applying ice will reduce swelling, while taking over-the-counter medication can relieve any present pain. If the area starts to itch, an antihistamine can also help curb your allergies. However, if this becomes necessary, you should visit a medical provider to ensure the allergic reaction won’t cause complications.
