If you’re looking to get in shape and feel empowered, boxing might be right up your alley. This complex sport relies on skills and form, but with proper training, anyone can be a boxer. Here are some beginner tips on how to master the form and technique.

Boxing Form

Although many people associate boxing with punching, the sport involves the entire body, which is why you’ll first need to learn how to assume the proper stance from your head to your toes. First, set up your feet. A solid lower body foundation will keep you balanced and nimble. If you’re right-handed, put your left foot forward and your right back, or vice versa if you’re left-handed. A sideways stance will make you a smaller target. Keep your feet in line with your shoulders to stabilize your stance and your knees slightly bent to lower your center of gravity.

Loosen your upper body for quicker responses. Your shoulder should face the opponent with your non-dominant arm bent and aligned with your body. Keep your elbows and chin down with your hands hovering around your face—the non-dominant hand in front of the chin and the other near your cheek. These positions allow your hands to attack and defend without blocking your sight or leaving your face open.

Boxing Technique

boxingRotate your hips and put your entire weight behind a punch; don’t just use your arms. Using your whole body generates more power. Don’t wear yourself out either. You may want to give it 110%, but a combination of harder and softer punches will throw off your opponent and reduce your chances of getting hurt.

Beginners often get caught up in the excitement of boxing, elevating their heart and breathing rate and tiring out more quickly. To pace yourself and maintain your stamina, work on breathing techniques. Breathe slowly through your nose when you’re circling the ring and your opponent. Your breath will naturally come faster when you pick up speed. As much as possible, avoid opening your mouth to inhale, which puts you at higher risk of a jaw injury.
