If you’re living off the grid—that is, off the municipal water system—you’ll have to fend for yourself when it comes to gathering a household supply. To lift the water up from underground and carry it through your plumbing system, you’ll need to schedule a well pump installation. But how do you know which pump type is best for your home? This decision will depend on a number of factors, including the depth of the aquifer and the size of your household. To learn more about well types and how they are chosen, consult the guide below.

How to Choose the Right Pump for a Well Pump Installation

1. Submersible Pump

This pump type is the most popular, as it can be adjusted to suit wells of various depths. However, the water table must be deep enough for the submersible pump to be completely underwater. Once installed, this watertight mechanism pushes water up from underground. If the water table is too low, it will start to suck up air, like a straw in an empty milkshake. If your well is extremely deep, choose a submersible pump, as it can reach depths of up to 400 feet.

2. Jet Pump

Single-drop jet pumps sit above wells and feature one inlet pipe. As such, they are better for shallow wells under 25 feet deep. Double-drop jet pumps are used in deeper wells and feature one underground and one above-ground component. These well pumps can reach depths of up to 110 feet.

3. Centrifugal Pump

If your well pump installation contractor suggests a centrifugal pump, your well is likely very shallow. In fact, these pumps are best for wells under 25 feet deep. This affordable option relies on a fan, which spins and creates a vacuum-like effect to pull water up from underground. Unlike other well pumps, the mechanical, repair-prone section of this model sits next to the well, not inside it, which makes maintenance easier.
