Unfortunately, leaky faucets happen to everyone. Whether it’s coming from the kitchen or bathroom, this is one of the most common plumbing repairs. Thankfully, because it’s so prevalent, in most cases, the causes aren’t much of a mystery. Usually, the leak can be attributed to one of the following issues.

3 Probable Reasons Why Your Faucet Is Dripping

1. Loose or Damaged O-Ring

If you see water pooling underneath a faucet’s handle, it’s likely the o-ring. Located within the handle mechanism, this is a rubber component that helps hold everything in place. Because it’s rubber, it will loosen and degrade over time, eventually needing to be replaced. While the part itself is inexpensive, this plumbing repair isn’t easy to handle without the proper tools and training.

When the water is coming directly from the spout, the issue is probably the washer. Like an o-ring, it’s subject to excessive wear and tear. Sitting directly above the valve seat at the base of the faucet, the constant friction of moving the handle can wear it down, which prevents it from fitting correctly. Note that the replacement must be identical; if it’s too large or loose, you’ll still have dripping water.

3. Corroded Valve Seat

If it’s not the washer, the entire valve seat may be to blame. If you have hard water or an old fixture made of brass, corrosion is likely. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may not need much in terms of plumbing repairs; simply call a professional to clean the build-up; otherwise, the whole seat may need to be replaced. If hard water is the primary cause, installing a water softener system can help minimize the sediment build-up in the future.
