Windows are a fantastic place for advertisements as they’re highly visible to passersby. Along with displays, window decals are an excellent form of advertising to inform passersby of specials and events and entice them to stop in and shop. With some elbow grease and patience, they’re also simple to change. Here’s how to safely remove a decal without damaging your windows, and prepare for a replacement.

How to Remove a Window Decal

Newer decals are typically easy window decalsto remove and may only require clean water and a plastic putty knife. Wet the sticker and let it soak for a couple of minutes, then use the putty knife to pull it off from the edge. Do so gently to avoid damaging the glass. If this doesn’t work, try soaking it with a solution to dissolve the adhesive. A mixture of 1 tsp. Castile soap or dish soap, 2 tbsp. white vinegar, and 1 cup of warm water usually works. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and apply it to the decal. Let it sit for a few minutes and then use the putty knife as before. For stubborn, older stickers, you will need to purchase commercial adhesive remover or use a heat gun. If you have trouble or are not comfortable doing so yourself, hire a professional. It’s better to invest in help than to risk scratching the glass.

How to Prepare for a New Decal

Many people make the mistake of scraping off the remaining residue, which will scratch the glass. Instead, moisten it with a damp cloth and let it soak. Next, apply an acetone-based nail varnish remover and rub away the glue. Then, use a mixture of soapy water and white vinegar to remove the rest. Wash the window to remove any remaining dirt. Finally, dry and wax the area to protect it before adding a new decal.
