Whether you’re building a new home or need to replace an existing driveway, it’s essential to select a design and material that complements the rest of your property. The choice of asphalt or concrete will also depend on how much maintenance you want to put into it and how long you plan to stay in the home, among other factors. Here’s a brief breakdown of the pros and cons of each to help you make an informed decision.

Asphalt

Asphalt, a sleek, black material, driveways looks like a continuation of the road. Over time, it stains less than concrete and doesn’t require a degreaser to remove oil spots. Its curing time is quicker than that of concrete too. It takes one to two days, whereas concrete can take up to three weeks. The main caveat of asphalt, however, is its lifespan. It typically only lasts 12 to 20 years, while a concrete driveway can last up to 40 years. It is also not as customizable. Asphalt driveways usually look identical while concrete is available in different colors, textures, and patterns via concrete stamping.

Concrete

People who choose concrete do so because of its attractive appearance, durability, and low-maintenance. When properly cared for, concrete driveways will last twice as long as asphalt, making it an excellent choice for those who intend to grow old in their home. The downside is if it is extensively damaged, concrete has to be replaced entirely and cannot be resurfaced as easily as asphalt. Patching is possible although it will not look seamless like asphalt.

If you choose, concrete will look like an extension of your house, mimicking the architectural style and materials, rather than an extension of the street. It is also generally considered a better choice for warm climates. Asphalt, which contains tar, gets sticky on hot days and warps. Also, concrete doesn’t require frequent sealing, unlike asphalt. Asphalt driveways need to be sealed six months after installation and every three to five years after that.
