As temperatures rise, you may be excited to take your boat out for a ride. However, there are some steps you should take to dewinterize your vessel after removing it from its storage unit. This will ensure it’s safe and sanitary for you and your family, which will help you enjoy it to the fullest. To help you prepare it for the season, here’s a maintenance checklist to go through first.

Steps to Take After Removing Your Boat From Storage

1. Clean It Up

Before doing anything else, wipe and polish the hard surfaces of the exterior and interior of the boat. These areas may have accumulated dust during storage. Vacuum the interior to remove allergens, too. If you find hardened grime on the exterior, power-wash it.

2. Fill the Tanks

You may have emptied the fluids of the boat to place it in a storage unit. After picking it up, top up the gas, oil, coolant, and power steering fluid. You can also use fuel additive to boost performance and protect the engine.

3. Check Inside

Change any light bulbs that have burned out, as well as belts and hoses that have become worn or hardened. If they’re simply loose around the pulleys, tighten them. Neither the hull nor propellers should have any cracks or dings, and the drain plugs must be new.

4. Guarantee Safety

If you removed your safety equipment to place the boat in the storage unit, replace it. The vessel should be equipped with a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, GPS system, radio, life jackets, flares, and carbon monoxide detectors for any rooms. This will make sure the boat is safe for the whole family and ready to hit the water.
