Building a new home is an exciting process — but you can’t start construction without taking the right preparatory steps. Excavation plays a vital role in ensuring that the land is ready for the foundation to be poured and for construction to begin. The following excavation tasks must be completed before construction starts.

4 Essential Excavation Tasks for New Home Construction

1. Land Clearing

The first step in site preparation is removing any objects that would interfere with construction work. This includes trees, underbrush, large rocks, and any remains from pre-existing structures. Tree roots and large underground rocks will also need to be removed so as not to interfere with laying the foundation for your home.

2. Foundation Excavation

Once the land clearing is complete, an excavating contractor will remove earth from the area where the foundation will go. The area to be excavated is marked by the general contractor supervising the project, who is also responsible for determining how deep the foundation needs to be.

3. Land Grading

excavationLand grading, also known as land leveling, ensures that the property is properly leveled. Dirt will be removed from high spots to fill low spots creating a flat, even surface in areas where buildings and roadways will be constructed. Land may also be graded on a slope to prevent excessive erosion and other water flow issues.

4. Septic System Installation

If the new home will have a septic tank, a separate area will need to be excavated for the septic system installation. The drain field where the septic tank will be located needs to be cleared and graded as well to ensure that the smooth functioning of the wastewater system.
