3 Essential Tips for Completing a DIY Oil Change, Lexington-Fayette Northeast, Kentucky

While most auto repair tasks are better left to the professionals, an oil change is relatively straightforward. That being said, drivers must be sure that they have the right filters and other materials for the job, as well as follow the proper procedures for an oil change. Keeping a few crucial tips in mind while performing an oil change will ensure you get reliable results.

Top 3 Tips For Doing Your Own Oil Change

1. Don’t Settle for Lesser Oil Filters

filtersThough most do-it-yourselfers understand the importance of selecting the right type of oil for their engine, many overlook the filters. Today’s oil filters are typically rated by distance; while high-quality filters are well-suited for extended oil change intervals, others are only rated to last for 3,000 miles. If you settle for a more affordable filter, you will need to conduct oil changes more frequently, even if your car could normally go without one for longer intervals.

2. Safety First

You must take proper steps to ensure your car doesn’t fall on you while performing an oil change. The safest option is to drive your vehicle onto a ramp that elevates the front tires. If this isn’t available, use jack stands to lift the front of your vehicle. Don’t use a bumper jack only, as it isn’t stable enough. Wear gloves and safety glasses to keep oil away from your skin and eyes.

3. Oil Disposal

Motor oil is toxic, which means you can’t simply toss it into the dumpster. To ensure you don’t accidentally harm the environment, used oil should be placed in a sealed container and taken to a recycling facility or an oil change shop where they can dispose of it safely.
