While concrete is pretty durable, it’s not indestructible. This is especially apparent in parking garages, where the floors are subject to massive amounts of wear on a daily basis. Choosing the right coating can delay concrete repair by ensuring yours remains intact for as long as possible.

What Are the Benefits of Concrete Coating?

Concrete coating systems increase the durability of the floor by providing a protective layer between it and the cars and people moving over it. In addition, it makes it resistant to stains caused by grease, motor oils,  acids, and harsh chemicals, which is a real problem within a commercial garage. Lastly, these coatings offer anti-slip properties for better traction.

Are There Different Types?

concrete repairEpoxy is a common coating used for commercial flooring. It offers a high-gloss shine and durability.  However, it can be vulnerable to water damage, especially if applied too soon after concrete installation or concrete repair. There is also epoxy terrazzo, which has the added benefit of aesthetic appeal thanks to its magnificent textures and patterns. However, these decorative flourishes are often not needed for parking garages. Both epoxy and epoxy terrazzo are also prone to problems when exposed to too much sunlight. Polyaspatic coatings, on the other hand, have some built-in UV resistance, which also makes them work well in high temperatures.

How Does the Process Work?

The process usually varies depending on which type of coating you’re using. With epoxy, the concrete must be completely cured and cleaned before the coating can be applied. From there, a primer may be added to ensure the bond between the concrete and coating is strong. After application, the epoxy coating is sealed for greater durability.
