While driving, your vehicle’s internal components are exposed to dirt, dust, and other harmful contaminants. Filters prevent these particles from damaging internal parts, avoiding the need for auto repairs. To be a more responsible car owner, follow this guide to different types of car filters and when to change each.

4 Filters Inside Your Car

1. Engine Air Filter

The engine filter traps any contaminants in the air that could interfere with the combustion process. In turn, this improves overall engine health and fuel economy. Dust and dirt are the main intruders filtered out of the air, so clean the unit after traveling in unpaved areas. An auto repair specialist should also examine the engine air filter during routine service checks, replacing the device as needed.

2. Cabin Air Filter

The cabin air filter, situated in the dashboard area, traps pollen, dust, mold spores, and other allergens before they can escape through vents. Changing the filter according to the manufacturer’s schedule, or more often if you drive in dusty conditions, will improve cabin air quality. It also reduces the risk of AC problems an auto repair specialist would have to solve.

3. Fuel Filter

If you use gasoline to power the vehicle, the fuel filter will remove any harmful particles in the liquid before it can affect car performance. In diesel-operated systems, the device extracts water before moisture accumulation damages components. Although gasoline fuel filters require minimal upkeep, the water separator for a diesel fuel filter must be drained frequently. Consult a mechanic for maintenance schedule advice. They’ll also tell you when the screen needs to be updated.

4. Oil Filter

Over time, metal particles from internal components can collect under the hood. The oil filter prevents these shavings from getting to the engine and causing damage. A technician will likely recommend updating the filter every time you schedule an oil change.
