You use electrical outlets at homes and at work every day. However, you may not really notice these outlets until they stop working. While this is the clearest indication that a new outlet is needed, there are many other signs that tell you an outlet should be replaced. If your outlets are exhibiting any of the following signs, contact an electrical services professional for an immediate replacement.

7 Reasons You Should Replace Your Outlets

1. Cracked Plates

When your outlet plates are cracked, dust, hair, and other debris can become trapped in them, creating a fire hazard. If you’re using undersized plates, you may also have the same issue. Don't just change the cover. The outlets themselves probably need to be replaced too because of damage from the debris. Have an electrical services technician inspect and replace them as necessary.

2. Burned Outlets

The outlet will need to be rewired or entirely replaced. Replace it with an electrical outlet with surge protection and a built-in tester for safety.

3. Heating Up

If you feel your outlets are getting hot, or if you see sparks when plugging in devices, they’re overheating. You might have bad wiring, or the outlet may be compromised. If there's soot around the connection slots, the outlet needs to be replaced. This issue is often caused by an excess of power surging through the outlet. To solve this, have a professional install an outlet that can handle a larger load.

4. Flickering Lights

When lights and other devices flicker, it means the outlet isn't keeping up with power demands. This is often caused by an outdated design or general wear and tear. Prevent damage to computers, lights, and other items by replacing these outlets when you experience flickering.

5. Two Prongs

Two-pronged outlets are outdated, and they aren’t grounded. These days, all the electrical outlets in your home should be the three-pronged variety. If you have recently purchased an older home, check all the outlets and then call someone to replace the two-pronged ones and perform any other necessary electrical services.

7. Lack of Modernization

Current electrical outlets contain slots for USB cords, letting you charge your phone or tablet by plugging it right into the wall. You can also get outlets with dimmer controls and other functionality. Update your outlets to meet your lifestyle needs.
