Caregiver burnout is a very real condition that can affect many families.  Adult day care programs give older and disabled individuals the chance to socialize with their peers and enjoy activities that support physical and cognitive function while simultaneously relieving caregivers from round-the-clock care or potential burnout.  However, not all adult day care centers are created equal.  Here are three questions to ask potential providers to ensure that you choose a facility that meets your needs.

Things to Ask Potential Day Care Providers

1. Do You Offer Or Have Referrals For Transportation?

It isn’t always easy to get a loved one to and from an adult day care program.  Facilities that provide transportation or that can suggest transportation options—picking up and dropping off—can save you time and potential frustration.  Talk with the program coordinator about transportation options, schedules, safety procedures, and wheelchair accessibility at the facility.

2. How Do You Customize Care and Services?

3. Which Activities Do You Offer?

Ask to see a calendar of planned activities for one or two months.  Learn if the facility orchestrates trips to parks, museums, and community events and if there are extra fees associated with the outings.  Question their activity coordinator about games, crafts, and lectures.  Find out if the facility has books, magazines, and media to meet the interests of the clients.
