Although dentures won’t form painful cavities like natural teeth, they still need regular care to keep your mouth healthy. Otherwise, bacteria buildup can lead to gum infections and additional issues. To protect your oral health, here is a guide to caring for the devices correctly.

3 Maintenance Tips for Dentures

1. Brush Daily With Denture-Friendly Products

denturesBrushing dentures at least once a day will remove food and beverage residue and plaque accumulation on the surfaces. After removing the artificial teeth, soak them in a nonabrasive denture cleanser. You should also use a toothbrush to remove any remaining stuck-on grime, as well as the adhesive glue. Make sure the bristles are soft; otherwise, they could leave scratches and scuffs in the material. Never use products with bleach to whiten dentures, as the chemical can break down the material. Similarly, chlorine should also be avoided, as it can rust the metal components.

2. Soak Dentures Before Going to Bed

Supporting dentures all day places pressure on the gums. To avoid pain and discomfort and let the soft tissue breathe, don’t wear dentures to bed at night. They should be placed in a glass full of denture solution. This will prevent the acrylic material from becoming dry and morphing out of shape. If water is used, it should be room temperature. Hot liquid can also distort the material.

3. Don’t Try DIY Denture Repair

Although the devices are designed for durability, you might still need adjustments or repairs from time to time. When this happens, consult your dentist for help. Otherwise, attempting to take matters into your own hands could damage the components. Bending metal parts, for example, could result in discomfort or injuries when wearing dentures.
