Wallpaper isn’t meant to come off easily. If you’re trying to remove it, you may be wondering about the most painless way to do so. Fortunately, if you know what you’re doing, the process of wallpaper removal can be completed in less than a day. All you need is a putty knife, water or a few chemicals, and a steady hand.

3 Ways to Remove Wallpaper

1. Try Stripping It

Before trying anything more complicated, insert a putty knife under a corner of the wallpaper and gently peel it from there. If it comes off in one slow, careful movement without leaving any glue behind, then you’re done and ready to move on with the rest of your home renovation or interior painting project.

2. Spray It With Water

Use a compression sprayer or pump to get the wall totally soaked. Let the water sit for about 15 minutes to dissolve the glue. Finally, scrape the wallpaper off with a putty knife. Water is slower than chemicals when it comes to wallpaper removal, but it’s also cheaper and odorless.

3. Use Chemicals

Should the water fail to do the job, don a pair of goggles and gloves, then soak the wall with a chemical stripper starting from the top and working your way down. After letting it sit for at least five minutes, you should be able to finish the wallpaper removal with your putty knife. Steaming can also be effective, but you’ll need to rent a machine and manually scrape off the paper with an angled blade once the heat softens or loosens the glue.
