If your home has a small refrigerator, you probably want more space. A tiny fridge isn’t unusable, and all it takes is a little creativity to work with what you have. Here are a few tips to help you maximize the space in your small appliance.

How to Create More Room in a Tiny Refrigerator

1. Go Vertical

By only using the shelves, you could be missing out on the headroom above shorter items, which is precious real estate. Use magnetic plastic containers to take advantage of the space on the sides and top of the fridge. These containers have magnets on the bottom, allowing you to store food without taking up shelf space. Use these storage receptacles for non-liquid foods to avoid a seeping mess.

Store small leftover items, like deli meats and cheese, in sealable plastic bags, and clip them to the bottom of the top rack so that they hang down in empty spaces above short items.

2. Incorporate a Lazy Susan

A Lazy Susan is a flat surface that rotates so that you can easily access items on the other side of the wheel. To optimize space, place a Lazy Susan in your refrigerator to organize small items, like condiment bottles and jars. You won’t have to reach into the back of the shelf to get what you need; simply spin the wheel to put it within grasp.

3. Prep Your Produce

refrigeratorLarge stalks of celery and carrots take up a lot of space in a small fridge, so prepare them in advance to make them smaller. Chop vegetables into pieces and store them in jars. Jars will keep veggies fresher longer, and they’re more compact than bulky plastic containers. Additionally, taking a few minutes to wash and prepare produce makes it more convenient when you need to cook with them or grab a quick, healthy snack.
