The summer heat can take a toll on anyone, but hot weather is especially challenging when you’re expecting. It’s natural for body temperatures to rise during pregnancy due to increased blood flow, hormonal changes, and a metabolism that’s working overtime. Overheating not only causes discomfort but also leads to complications that affect pregnancy health and birth outcomes. As such, soon-to-be moms should take extra precautions to stay cool. Here are a few tips to help you get through the hottest time of year safely and comfortably.

How to Stay Cool in the Heat When Pregnant

1. Stay Hydrated

Dehydration is one of the chief pregnancy health concerns when it’s hot out. The American Pregnancy Association recommends those who are expecting drink 8 to 12 glasses of water a day. Water helps regulate body temperature and makes it easier for your body to release heat. It’s also essential to replace electrolytes you lose through sweating by eating foods like bananas, spinach, and olives.

2. Avoid Hot & Spicy Foods

pregnancy healthDiet is a crucial part of pregnancy health and can affect body temperature as well. The body produces more heat when warm or spicy foods are consumed. Opt to eat cooling foods in the summer instead, including salads, marinated vegetables, and fruits. Also, lighter meals don’t ramp up your metabolism the way heavy, fatty meals do.

3. Wear the Right Clothes

To stay as cool as possible, choose summer outfits carefully. Wear loose-fitting clothes made out of lightweight and breathable fabrics—linen, cotton, and silk. Heavier fabrics trap heat. Light colors, too, are better than dark because they reflect the sun’s rays.

4. Keep Out of the Sun

Pregnancy often causes the skin to be more sensitive to sun exposure. Getting sunburned will raise your core body temperature. For this reason, try to avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day, when the strength of the sun is at its peak. And wear sunscreen, or stay in the shade, whenever you do venture out.
