Care and Cleaning Instructions for Vinyl Replacement Windows

One of the joys of owning vinyl windows is that they require little or no maintenance.  With proper care, you should enjoy many years of reliable service from your new windows.  We have found that 409 cleaner work excellent for vinyl.  Otherwise, just take a damp rag with warm soapy water and wipe down the window frame.  Avoid the use of harsh chemical cleaners as they may damage the vinyl.  For cleaning the glass, any regular glass cleaner will work fine.  Use a soft clean cotton cloth to wipe the window dry.

One of the unique features that our windows offer is the ability to clean the outside glass pane from the inside of the house.  It’s easy:

On Double Hung Windows lift the bottom sash about 4 inches up. Then, slide the two latches on the left and right sides of the top of the sash inward and pull gently until the top of the sash tilts in toward you.  To clean the outside of the top sash, leave the bottom sash tilted in, slide the top sash down about 6 inches down and repeat the unlatching procedure.  To replace, tilt the sash until the latches click into place.

On Sliding Windows, slide window open.  Grasp the sash on each side and lift sash, pull bottom toward the inside and drop sash out of top track. Replace sash in reverse manner.

On Casement Windows remove the screen and crank the window out as far as it will go and you should be able to reach both sides easily.

On Awning Windows remove the screen and crank the window about halfway.  On the underside of the sash, you will see two black clips that connect the window sash to the crank mechanism.  Slide the clips toward you to release the sash.  The crank mechanism will drop slightly and you will be able to tip the window up to reach the outside.

Madison Vinyl windows are designed to provide style, thermal efficiency and long-lasting performance.  Only a little care and good judgement are needed to keep them in top operating conditions for many years.

Sills should be kept clean when practical; windows should be kept locked for maximum weather seal and security.

Slider window tracks should be kept clean so they glide easily and seal tightly.  Drain holes located in each track should also be kept clean.

Urban areas generally have varying degrees of air pollution. To ensure smooth, continuous service, all hinges, operators, balances and sliding tracks should be protected annually with a clear, dry, Teflon spray lubricant.  CRC Heavy Duty Silicone is recommended.

While Casement and Awning windows provide excelled ventilation, you should be aware that under high wind situations, the window could become damaged if left open.  This also applies to any other style window using a casement window such as Bay, Bow or Garden Windows.

Madison Vinyl windows are thermally efficient, and so the insulated glass and chambered vinyl frame should be virtually free of condensation.  Should you experience condensation that could be a sign that your home’s interior humidity levels exceed the maximum recommended levels by building authorities such as National Warm Air Heating Association.  The Chart below shows the maximum recommended interior humidity levels, based on a 70-degree interior temperature.
