Putting your summer convertible or RV in a storage facility will keep it safe and out of the way when the weather changes. However, before doing so, you need to prepare the vehicle in the following ways since long periods of downtime can impact parts and finishes.

3 Ways to Get Your Vehicle Ready for Storage

1. Clean Everything

storage-advantage-self-storageYou don’t want to leave any lingering film, oils, or food in your car, so clean every surface carefully. Vacuum the entire interior. Check the center console, glove compartment, seat backs, trunk, and all storage spaces for perishable items to remove. Clear stains and debris from the exterior so they don’t damage the paint. Allow everything to air dry so moisture doesn’t cause corrosion.

2. Disconnect & Refill

Refill your gas tank and top off the oil, wiper fluids, and other liquids to prevent moisture from building up in the tanks. Add a fuel stabilizer as well to reduce ethanol buildup that may lead to rust, which can damage the engine. To prevent battery damage, disconnect the cables and remove the unit. You can store it at home to keep it safe. When you park the car in the storage facility, leave the parking brake disengaged so the brake pads don’t fuse with the rotors.

3. Cover

Get a weatherproof cover for your car, even if you’re storing it indoors. If rodents get in, they can destroy the seating and chew through fuel lines and electrical wiring, leading to costly repairs. You can also stuff tin foil into the tailpipe, fresh air intake, and engine air intake to cut off entry points. Storage facilities take steps to keep rodents and insects away, but it’s always best to play it safe.
